Fashioning Confidence: My Journey with Sante Grace
In a world where style often comes in a "one-size-fits-all" approach, I’ve made it my mission to redefine the narrative by creating a luxury plus-size clothing line that champions inclusivity and self-esteem. As the founder and head designer of Sante Grace, my journey is a testament to perseverance, innovation, and the belief that everyone deserves to look and feel their best.
A Dual Passion: Entertainment and Fashion
My career began in the entertainment industry as a talent agent. For over 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of representing renowned actors, writers, producers, and directors. But my foray into fashion began during the pandemic, when I identified a glaring gap in the market: upscale clothing for plus-size women. Recognizing this "white space" — an area of unmet need — I decided to take matters into my own hands.
“By the time I could afford designer clothes, I couldn’t fit into them.” This realization, coupled with my personal experiences as a curvy woman, led me to create Sante Grace. The brand caters to professional women with expansive careers and social lives who need stylish, high-quality clothing for occasions ranging from boardrooms to red carpets.
Ending the Crying in Fitting Rooms
Sante Grace was born to address a long-standing problem: the lack of fashionable, designer-quality options for plus-size women. My mission is simple but profound: to end the tears of frustration in fitting rooms.
“People come in all shapes, sizes, and colors,” I often say, emphasizing that plus-size individuals deserve clothing that fits their lifestyles and aspirations. Whether it’s a ski trip, a professional event, or a glamorous festival like Cannes, Sante Grace ensures that women have something to wear that makes them feel beautiful and confident.
Shifting Perspectives on Body Image
I am also on a mission to dismantle stereotypes about plus-size individuals. “Being plus-size doesn’t mean you’re lazy or unhealthy. It’s simply who you are.” My designs aren’t about hiding or camouflaging; they’re about celebrating individuality.
Drawing parallels to the beauty industry’s historical biases, I often explain, “For years, darker-skinned individuals were sold the idea that they needed to lighten their skin to be beautiful. Similarly, plus-size people are often told to wear only dark colors or try to look smaller. At Sante Grace, we reject that notion. Our designs are about empowerment, not conformity.”
Confidence Through Courage
My journey has not been without challenges. As a Black woman in the predominantly white, male entertainment industry, I developed confidence through perseverance. “Confidence comes from doing,” I’ve learned. “Even if you’re afraid, walk through that fear. Over time, your track record of success will reinforce your belief in yourself.”
This same courage guided me as I built Sante Grace. Facing criticism for promoting inclusivity in an industry often resistant to change, I stayed true to my vision. I encourage others to embrace their fears and trust their abilities. “Look at where you started and where you are now. The gap is filled with moments when you faced your fears and succeeded.”
Challenges and Triumphs
Launching Sante Grace was not without its hurdles. Initially, I underestimated the cultural resistance to plus-size luxury fashion. “I had no idea I was being revolutionary,” I admit. “Some people criticized me for promoting obesity or questioned the price of my clothing. But I’m not just selling clothes; I’m selling self-esteem and confidence.”
Despite these challenges, the response to Sante Grace has been overwhelmingly positive. The brand has carved out a space where plus-size women can find clothing that celebrates their uniqueness and supports their aspirations.
A Revolution in Style
My story is one of resilience, innovation, and a commitment to changing the fashion industry. Through Sante Grace, I’ve proven that luxury and inclusivity can coexist beautifully. My designs empower women to embrace their bodies and express themselves with confidence.
As I often say, “I’m not trying to make myself look like a size four. I’m just trying to be the best version of myself.” With Sante Grace, I’m giving countless women the tools to do the same.
I had the honor of appearing on The KAJ Masterclass LIVE, hosted by Khudania Ajay, where I delved even deeper into the ethos and impact of Sante Grace.
